So I’m thinking of expanding this thing, now that an old flame, art, is back in the picture—don’t worry, Amy is down with it.

After my summer art class I forgot how much I truly enjoy hands on art and drawing. I still really enjoy working on and creating digital art and graphics, but there’s just something special about creating something with your hands and a bit of lead/graphite (Summer’s class was just B&W pencil). All in all, this, artistic stuff, was what I was meant to do. It has always been a passion, but my relationship with it has been like a bad teen romance where the kids are from different families or opposite sides of the track, etc. You know the formula: forbidden romance, foolish decisions to please the status quo, long drawn out drama, etc.

Again, this isn’t replacing writing, it’s just where I am right now and it’s where my strengths lie. If anything, my stories are still rolling around in my head and getting internal refinement with time and distance.

For now I’m still not sure where my art will go. I’ve created a new page temporarily, but am thinking about hosting the few pieces I have on some free format like DeviantArt or CGHub. I’m not quite to the point of creating (and buying) a whole new site just for the little art I have, but at the same time don’t want to go with some limited, free website creator or hosting service.

Plus, I want to keep this site flavored to the style of writing I’m working on rather than reigning it in to some minimalist design that is better suited for displaying art.

All this to say, I’m still exploring my options… and maybe working on a logo/brand for myself, at least for my alter-ego as an artist/graphic designer. Don’t worry, I won’t go all Garth Brooks/Chris Gaines on you people.

Garth Brooks = Chris Gaines.

Another example of showing my age. No one really understands why this happened or what was going on, but it happened nonetheless.

... or something of the sort

Author Note: This post was written in June 2013. Today is September 1, 2013… so yeah. I didn’t feel like editing it for the change so just your timey wimey imagination and read this post as if it were June 2013.

Here we are at the halfway mark of 2013. Needless to say, it’s been a busy year where I wish I had more time with this and less time with that—the website and writing two of the things I wish I had more time. I’m also just realizing that this is my first post of 2013… yikes! I’d apologize, but it’s probably an offense I will continue to commit, in fact, I know it is.

So, 2013. Let’s see, I changed jobs, going from one dead-ender to another, but at least I have a night schedule that allows me to attend daytime college classes which will finally start to come in handy starting in the Fall and will continue from there. I could rant on vaguely about my new-ish job, but yeah… it’s a means to an end. The “end” to which I’m still traveling towards is graphics and design. I’m finally learning what it’s like to enjoy school thanks to the Visual Communication (VisCom) program at Austin Community College. My only regret is not finding this path sooner or when free time was in higher supply, but I’m doing my best to enjoy it now and make the most of it despite a pesky 40 hour job getting in the way.

The sad truth of all of this though is that writing has taken a fairly comfy, but unhappy back seat to all that has been going on. I started the year still knee deep in a work project that drained all my mental energy and all for not since I probably got erased from the history books due to leaving before it was finished. Oh well, not my legacy and it would be sad if it was. Then came the new job and learning all the ins and outs of how to deal with crazy Texans while dusting off the ol’ study cap and tackling my first class in VisCom. Yada, yada, yada and here I am at work chipping away at this post in the middle of a summer semester tackling my limit of two classes.

Author note #2: Is “yada, yada, yada” one of those phrases that people will soon forget or forget where it gained its popularity? 10 points for knowing the reference without Google (or Bing).

Honestly, I wish I had more time to write and maybe even revamp the site since I’ve learned a lot in just a semester and a half of school. As it is, some days I feel like I bounce between school and work while holding dear the precious bits of free time I have with my wife relaxing, enjoying Summer movies, and trying to recharge on my days off.

It’s not all doom and gloom though. I really and truly enjoy my classes and often wish I had less job and more school. As far as writing goes, I’d love to try and write in the little bits of free time at work, but my job is not exactly one that inspires creative writing, unless I wanted to write from the perspective of a morally gray villain—that, I could probably conjure up quite well. Plus, it seems many have abandoned the night shift and free time is a scarce commodity, and Texans are not abandoning abusing, neglecting, and exploiting children, elderly, and disabled people.

For now, we’ll see what comes. I won’t make any promises, but I’m not abandoning this ship either.

Doctor Who - The TARDIS
Well NaNoWriMo was both a success and a not-so success. The successful part was that I did get back into the writing game. The unsuccessful part was that Thanksgiving totally derailed me and I did not finish my NaNo goal. I will say that the NaNoWriMo prophets were right, I was spontaneously crazy busy during November, but I still managed to write. Now with Christmas over and the New Year knocking on the door, bringing forth my return to school, I need to get ramped up for the next round, but thought I’d throw out a blog bone since it’s been awhile. Yes, I know that’s my favorite tune. I don’t blog often and should. Here I am though, blogging away.

On a completely unrelated note, I’ve now caught up, thanks to a stay at my mother-in-law’s who has cable and DVR, with all episodes of ‘Doctor Who’. I started with the 9th doctor on Netflix back in mid fall and have been adventuring with the doctor ever since. I’ve laughed, cried, been moved, intrigued and fascinated throughout the whole journey and now I feel like I’ve been dropped off for a long stay, waiting for the doctor to return. If you’ve never seen the show, I highly recommend it. In fact, stop reading this and go watch it… right now. I’ll even give you a paragraph break to ease the transition.

See, a break. For those who need not flee so soon I’ve really got nothing left to write, well, except for the rest of my book. So here’s to hoping some of the TARDIS magic rubs off and I can go write something great. Did I mention I got an awesome disappearing and reappearing TARDIS mug for Christmas? It’s cool. Doctor Who stuff is cool.
